This January, Artistic Director Yo-Yo Ma takes part in the first-ever Youth Music Culture Guangdong, a two-week festival that brings together young musicians from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
The festival, which explores the role of the musician as a cultural citizen, features several public events including symphonic and chamber concerts, “Music + Dialogue” sessions, improvisation workshops, and open rehearsals. Mr. Ma hopes that participants will ponder three core issues: content, communication, and reception.
In creating the festival’s program, Mr. Ma emphasizes how “the power of culture” can lead us to discover truths, establish trust, and share meanings as we search for solutions to confront the future.
Youth Music Culture Guangdong is organized by the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and the Xinghai Concert Hall, and is scheduled to become an annual event. Festival faculty includes core members of the Silk Road Ensemble and principals of major American orchestras.
