On September 27, Yo-Yo Ma joins orchestral collective The Knights for two concerts at Caramoor. For the evening performance, Yo-Yo Ma takes the stage with The Knights for Osvaldo Golijov’s Azul, “a distinctive and personal contemporary work” (New York Times) that was written for the American cellist in 2006. The Knights also perform Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony and Giovanni Sollima’s Federico II.
For the afternoon family concert – which includes interactive games, quizzes and discussion for all ages – Ma performs Dvorak’s Song to the Moon, arranged by The Knights, from the opera Rusalka. Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony is followed by Ascending Bird, an arrangement of a traditional Persian folk melody by Knights co-Artistic Director and violinist Colin Jacobsen and virtuoso santur player Siamak Aghaei that musically retells the fable of a bird’s attempt to fly to the sun.
