In January 2018, Yo-Yo Ma returns to lead the 2nd annual Youth Music Culture Guangdong in Guangzhou, China. The event is presented by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and is organized by the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and Xinghai Concert Hall. A new YMCG Orchestra will comprise young musicians from across China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and abroad, and will perform under the leadership of Yo-Yo and a prestigious teaching faculty. YMCG features 10 days of exploration, conversation, and performance, dedicated not only to the creation of excellent musicians, but to the fostering of artists who think actively about why music is needed in their communities. Participants are challenged to consider how to serve those needs. “The participants will make many, many connections during these ten days…encounters with colleagues, new musical relationships, conversations that develop into friendships,” says Yo-Yo Ma. The workshop’s goal is to help these young musicians sustain and put into practice the ideals of exploration, collaboration, and service in their daily lives.
